If you run a small shop, or you are about to start one, here is the short answer: Shopify's AI tools are now included on every plan at no extra cost, its assistant Sidekick can do real admin work instead of just answering questions, and your products are listed inside ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google's AI Mode and Meta by default. The upside is real: faster setup, product content in minutes, and a new source of buyers. The catch is that AI traffic is still small, AI output needs checking, and you have less control over where your catalog shows up. This guide collects what Shopify and its partners have actually published, with dates and sources.

The short version

  • AI is bundled, not upsold. Sidekick and Shopify Magic come with every plan. Shopify notes that features and usage limits vary by plan (Shopify Sidekick).
  • Sidekick now does the work. Since the Winter '26 and Spring '26 Editions it builds admin apps, automations, reports and theme edits, and it connects to apps like Klaviyo and Judge.me (Spring '26 Edition).
  • Your catalog is already in AI assistants. "Agentic Storefronts" are active by default for eligible stores (Shopify Help Center).
  • Buying inside ChatGPT was scaled back. Since March 2026, ChatGPT buyers finish on the merchant's own checkout (Selling on ChatGPT).
  • AI orders are growing fast from a small base. Shopify says AI-driven traffic and orders tripled year over year in Q2 2026 (Q2 2026 call).

What AI tools Shopify includes today

We went through Shopify's Help Center, App Store listings and Edition pages on September 16, 2026. This is what a small merchant gets:

Tool What it does Who gets it Cost
Sidekick Assistant in the admin: analyzes sales, edits products, writes content, builds reports, automations and custom admin apps All plans; app generation only on Grow, Advanced and Plus Included
Shopify Magic Writes product descriptions, emails, blog posts; removes and edits image backgrounds; generates theme blocks All plans (some features vary) Included
AI store builder Describe your business in up to 100 characters and get store designs Trial, Basic, Grow, Advanced (English storefront) Free designs
AI theme blocks Generates custom sections for Theme Store themes Trial, Basic, Grow, Advanced, Plus Included
Shopify Inbox Storefront chat with an "AI sales associate" that answers buyers and recommends products All plans Free app
Knowledge Base app Lets you edit the FAQs that AI shopping agents use about your store All plans Free app
Translate & Adapt Auto-translates products, collections, pages and blog posts into up to 2 languages All plans Free app
Tinker Mobile app with 100+ AI creative tools for product photos, logos and videos Anyone Free, with usage limits

Sources: Sidekick help, app generation limits, Shopify Magic, AI store builder, theme generation, theme blocks, Inbox, Knowledge Base, Translate & Adapt, Tinker.

Two limits are worth knowing before you pick a plan. Sidekick's custom app generation needs Grow or higher, has hourly and weekly limits, and works only in a desktop browser. Shopify Audiences, the ad-targeting tool, needs Shopify Plus, so it is effectively out of reach for small shops (Shopify Audiences).

Sidekick went from chatbot to operator

Sidekick changed more in the last nine months than any other part of Shopify.

In the Winter '26 Edition (December 10, 2025) it gained proactive recommendations called Sidekick Pulse, custom app generation, plain-language Flow automations, custom reports, theme edits, photo editing in the mobile app and reusable "Skills" (Winter '26 Edition).

In the Spring '26 Edition (June 17, 2026) Shopify added Sidekick App Extensions with more than 15 partners, including Klaviyo, Loop, Smile, Judge.me and Yotpo. It also added background multi-tasking, daily guidance, Sidekick on every screen of the mobile app, Apple Watch support and purchase-order generation (Spring '26 merchant news). Some blogs call this release "Summer '26"; Shopify's own name is Spring '26.

Shopify reports heavy use. In Q2 2026, merchants had nearly 34 million Sidekick conversations, daily active merchants grew 3.6 times year over year, and more than 36,000 custom apps had been built with it (PYMNTS, Aug 5, 2026). These are company figures, not independent audits.

What Sidekick still cannot do matters too. Shopify says it cannot talk to your customers, cannot change your store without your explicit approval, and cannot edit images inside themes or product lists (Getting started with Sidekick). Merchants in Shopify's community forum have reported Sidekick inventing variables and building faulty Flow logic (community thread, Aug 2026). Treat its output as a draft you check, not a finished job.

Your products are already inside ChatGPT, Copilot, Google and Meta

This is the biggest structural change for merchants. Shopify's Agentic Storefronts send your catalog, through a system called Shopify Catalog, to AI assistants. According to the Help Center, it is active by default for eligible stores, you manage it under Sales channels > Agentic, and AI orders show up in your admin with the channel they came from (Agentic storefronts).

Channel How the sale completes Who can sell there today
ChatGPT Buyer finishes on your own store checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab Stores selling to US buyers, with store policies filled in
Microsoft Copilot Direct checkout inside Copilot Catalog merchants selling to US buyers
Google AI Mode and Gemini Native "Buy" checkout with Google Pay; you stay the seller of record Select US shops for now, wider rollout underway
Meta Direct checkout, including from ads Listed as a channel; details not published

What happened to checkout inside ChatGPT

In September 2025, Shopify and OpenAI announced Instant Checkout, which let people buy without leaving ChatGPT (Shopify news, Sep 29, 2025). In March 2026, OpenAI scaled that back and said it would focus on search and product discovery (American Banker, Mar 16, 2026). Shopify's Help Center now describes the current model: shoppers discover products in ChatGPT and complete the purchase on the merchant's checkout.

Does it cost extra?

Shopify's Help Center says there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT beyond standard payment processing. You will find guides online claiming a 4% fee; we could not confirm that from any primary source, and it contradicts Shopify's documentation. One detail is worth reading, though: the Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms, last updated July 7, 2026, say Shopify "may, in its discretion, assess a fee" on these transactions and may share customer personal information with the participating channels (Agentic Storefronts terms). No fee today does not guarantee no fee later.

The protocol underneath

Google and Shopify co-developed the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), announced on January 11, 2026. It now powers direct checkout on Copilot, Google and Meta, and Shopify merchants are enabled by default (Shopify, Jan 11, 2026, Google, Jan 11, 2026). You do not need to do anything technical to use it, but it explains why Shopify stores reach several assistants at once.

How much AI traffic is really reaching Shopify stores

Shopify's own numbers are striking, and Shopify itself said they started "on a small base":

Period What Shopify reported
Q4 2025 Orders from AI searches up 15 times since January 2025
Q1 2026 AI-driven traffic up 8 times and AI orders up nearly 13 times, year over year
Q2 2026 AI-driven traffic and orders both tripled year over year; 75% of AI-attributed orders came from outside the top 100 categories

Sources: Q4 2025 call, Q1 2026 call, Q2 2026 call.

That last point is good news for niche sellers: AI assistants are sending buyers to long-tail products, not only to the biggest categories. Shopify also said about half of AI-referred sessions land directly on a product page.

For outside context, Adobe measured AI-referral traffic to US retail sites up 62% year over year in July 2026, converting 60% better than other traffic (Digital Commerce 360, Aug 19, 2026). Adobe's and Shopify's datasets differ, so do not compare the two growth rates directly. And in Shopify's own forum, merchants in September 2026 still describe small ChatGPT and Perplexity referral numbers with few orders they can clearly attribute (community thread).

The business around it is healthy. In Q2 2026, Shopify reported gross merchandise volume of $115.6 billion, up 32%, and revenue of $3.58 billion, up 34% (SEC filing, Aug 5, 2026).

Shopify runs on AI internally, too

In April 2025, CEO Tobi Lütke posted an internal memo saying "reflexive AI usage is now a baseline expectation at Shopify". Teams were asked to show why AI could not do a job before requesting more headcount (Digital Commerce 360, Apr 8, 2025). On the Q1 2026 earnings call, Shopify said 50% or more of its code is now written by AI. For merchants, this mostly explains the release pace: Shopify is shipping AI features every few months, and the admin you learn today will keep changing.

The risks nobody puts in the launch video

  1. Fewer clicks from AI answers. Pew Research found that people clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits when Google showed an AI summary, compared with 15% without one (Pew, Jul 22, 2025). Being inside the AI answer matters more than before.
  2. Platforms change the rules quickly. ChatGPT's in-chat checkout lasted about six months before OpenAI pulled it back. Build on channels you own, like your store and email list, not only on AI assistants.
  3. Limited opt-out. You can switch channels off one by one, but turning off agentic storefronts does not remove your products from Shopify Catalog for the Shop app and storefront search (data sharing and privacy). Merchants have pushed back on this in the forum (community thread, Jun 2026).
  4. You own the mistakes. Shopify states that the merchant is responsible for the accuracy of AI-written descriptions, translations and generated code. Merchants have reported Shopify's AI inventing technical product data (community thread, Feb 2026).
  5. Mass AI content can hurt search rankings. Google's spam policies name using generative AI to publish many pages without adding value as scaled content abuse (Google Search Central). Use Magic for a first draft, then add what only you know about the product.
  6. Fraud and disputes. In the Merchant Risk Council's 2026 report, 64% of merchants said first-party misuse, often called friendly fraud, is increasing (MRC, Mar 18, 2026). Payments provider Worldpay notes that liability for "wrong item" disputes on agent purchases is still unsettled (Worldpay).

A 2026 checklist for small shops

These steps come straight from Shopify's and Google's documentation:

  1. Fill in your Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and Refund Policy under Settings > Policies. Selling in ChatGPT requires them.
  2. Open Sales channels > Agentic and decide, channel by channel, whether to allow catalog access and direct checkout.
  3. Clean up product data: clear titles, attributes and variants. Shopify says Catalog-structured data converts at twice the rate of scraped data in AI search.
  4. Install the free Knowledge Base app and answer the questions AI agents ask about shipping, returns and sizing.
  5. Watch the AI channel reports in your admin to see which assistants actually send orders.
  6. Review every AI-generated description, translation and code block before it goes live.
  7. Test Sidekick apps and Flows on a copy or with test events before you switch them on.

What Shopify costs in 2026

Prices shown on shopify.com/pricing on September 16, 2026, in US dollars. Shopify notes that pricing can vary by location.

Plan Paid monthly Paid yearly (per month) Fee with a third-party payment provider AI note
Basic $39 $29 2% Sidekick and Magic included
Grow $105 $79 1% Adds Sidekick app generation
Advanced $399 $299 0.6% Same AI tools as Grow
Plus From $2,300 n/a 0.2% Adds Shopify Audiences

The current offer is 3 days free, then $1 per month for 3 months. Shopify's trial page says no credit card is needed to start the trial. If the trial ends without a plan, the store is paused, and Shopify does not extend or reset trials (free trial rules).

For most new shops, Basic covers the AI tools that save the most time: product descriptions, image edits, Sidekick answers and the AI store builder. Grow makes sense once you want Sidekick to build custom admin apps.

How Shopify compares on AI

Platform AI direction in 2026
Wix Launched Wix Harmony, an AI website builder with an agent called Aria, in January 2026, and Symphony, a multi-agent system for small businesses, in August 2026 (Wix Harmony, Symphony)
Squarespace AI website builder plus an "AI Visibility" tool, added in July 2026, that shows how a business appears in ChatGPT and Gemini (July 2026 updates)
WooCommerce Open approach: an MCP integration is live, while UCP and OpenAI's protocol are listed as coming soon (WooCommerce agentic commerce)
BigCommerce Pushes product data to ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity and added agent-enabled checkout in April 2026 (Commerce Live 2026)

Shopify's edge right now is distribution: default listing in four AI channels plus a co-authored checkout protocol. Its competitors are catching up on builders and assistants.

Who should start on Shopify now

Start now if you sell physical or digital products to buyers in the US, you want AI to handle product content and admin chores, and you would rather be listed in ChatGPT, Copilot and Google automatically than set up each channel yourself.

Look elsewhere if your business is services, like coaching, consulting or clinic appointments, and what you really need is booking, client logins and intake forms. A store platform is built around products and checkout, so an AI app builder may fit better. In our Lovable free plan test we built exactly that kind of booking app and documented where the free credits ran out. Our testing method explains how we evaluate tools like these.

Wait and watch if you sell only outside the US and AI channels are your main reason to switch. ChatGPT and Copilot selling currently require selling to US buyers, and Google checkout is limited to select US shops.

How we put this guide together

This is a research guide, not a hands-on review. We did not build a Shopify store for it. On September 16, 2026, we read Shopify's Help Center, Edition pages, pricing page, investor releases and SEC filings, earnings call transcripts, announcements from Google, Microsoft and PayPal, and independent reporting from Pew, Adobe data via Digital Commerce 360, Modern Retail, TechCrunch and the Merchant Risk Council. Company growth figures are self-reported. Where sources disagreed, we followed the primary source and said so. Shopify changes fast, so check the linked pages before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify Sidekick free?

Sidekick is included with every Shopify plan at no extra cost. Shopify notes that features and usage limits vary by plan: for example, generating custom admin apps with Sidekick requires the Grow, Advanced or Plus plan (Shopify Sidekick page and Help Center, checked September 16, 2026).

What is the difference between Shopify Magic and Sidekick?

Shopify Magic is the set of AI features built into specific parts of the admin, such as writing a product description or removing an image background. Sidekick is the conversational assistant that can analyze your store, run tasks, build reports, automations and apps, and work with third-party apps. Both are included on all plans.

Can I sell on ChatGPT with Shopify?

Yes, if your store sells to US buyers, your products are eligible for Shopify Catalog, and your Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and Refund Policy are filled in. Agentic Storefronts are active by default for eligible stores. Buyers discover products in ChatGPT and complete the purchase on your own store checkout.

Does selling in ChatGPT through Shopify cost extra fees?

Shopify's Help Center says there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT beyond standard payment processing. However, the Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms (updated July 7, 2026) allow Shopify to assess a fee on these transactions in the future.

Can I opt out of Shopify Agentic Storefronts?

You can turn catalog access and direct checkout off for each AI channel under Sales channels > Agentic. Turning agentic storefronts off does not remove your products from Shopify Catalog for the Shop app and storefront search.

Is the Shopify AI store builder free?

Generating store designs from a short description is free, and you can create designs before signing up. To publish a store you need a trial or a paid plan. Personalized theme generation is available on the free trial, Basic, Grow and Advanced when the storefront is in English.

Is Shopify worth it in 2026 for a small business?

For product sellers who reach US buyers, Shopify now bundles useful AI tools on every plan and lists products in ChatGPT, Copilot, Google and Meta by default. Basic costs $39 per month or $29 per month billed yearly (US pricing, September 16, 2026). Service businesses that mainly need bookings and client logins may be better served by an AI app builder.
