Yes, you can sell on ChatGPT with Shopify, and if your store is eligible you may already be doing it. Shopify turns on its "Agentic Storefronts" by default, which lists your products in ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google's AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta. What changed in 2026 is how the sale finishes: ChatGPT no longer completes the purchase inside the chat. The shopper discovers your product in ChatGPT and pays on your own store checkout. Here is how it works today, who qualifies, what it costs, and the settings worth checking, based on Shopify's documentation as of September 16, 2026.

How selling on ChatGPT works with Shopify today

Shopify collects and cleans your product data in a system called Shopify Catalog, then shares it with AI assistants through Agentic Storefronts. According to Shopify's Help Center, Agentic Storefronts are active by default for eligible stores, you manage them under Sales channels, then Agentic, and orders that come from AI channels appear in your admin with the channel they came from (Agentic storefronts).

For ChatGPT specifically, the flow is:

  1. A shopper asks ChatGPT for a product, for example a gift or a specific item.
  2. ChatGPT shows matching products from Shopify Catalog, which can include yours.
  3. The shopper picks your product and completes the purchase on your store's checkout, opened in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab.
  4. The order lands in your Shopify admin like any other order, attributed to the ChatGPT channel.

Shopify says Catalog-structured product data converts at twice the rate of scraped data in AI search (Spring '26 Edition). That is why clean product titles and attributes matter more than they used to.

What happened to Instant Checkout inside ChatGPT

If you read about this in 2025, you probably saw a different picture. On September 29, 2025, Shopify and OpenAI announced Instant Checkout, which let shoppers buy without leaving ChatGPT (Shopify news).

In March 2026, OpenAI scaled Instant Checkout back and said it was prioritizing search and product discovery (American Banker, Mar 16, 2026). Modern Retail reported the same week that Shopify was moving ChatGPT sales to its Agentic Storefronts model (Modern Retail, Mar 12, 2026).

So guides written in late 2025 that describe buying "inside ChatGPT" with a separate checkout are out of date. Today the checkout is yours.

Who can sell on ChatGPT through Shopify

Based on Shopify's Help Center, your store needs to meet these conditions:

Requirement Detail
Sell to US buyers The store can be based anywhere, but it must sell to buyers in the United States
Catalog-eligible products Most products qualify automatically; B2B-only items and products OpenAI prohibits are excluded
Store policies filled in Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and Return/Refund policy under Settings, then Policies
Accept the terms The Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms must be accepted

If you change your ChatGPT settings, Shopify notes that opt-out changes can take up to 7 days to apply.

Does it cost extra to sell on ChatGPT?

Shopify's Help Center says there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT beyond your standard payment processing. You will see articles claiming OpenAI charges merchants 4% per sale. We could not find that figure in any primary source, and it contradicts Shopify's current documentation, so we treat it as unverified.

There is one line worth knowing. The Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms, last updated on July 7, 2026, say Shopify "may, in its discretion, assess a fee" on transactions from Agentic Storefronts, and that Shopify may share customer personal information with participating channels (Agentic Storefronts terms). No fee today is not a promise of no fee later.

The other AI channels you are already in

ChatGPT is only one of the channels. This is how the others work, per Shopify, Microsoft and Google documentation:

Channel How the sale completes Who can sell there today
ChatGPT Your own store checkout, in an in-app browser or new tab Stores selling to US buyers
Microsoft Copilot Direct checkout inside Copilot Catalog merchants selling to US buyers
Google AI Mode and Gemini Native checkout with Google Pay; you stay the seller of record Select US shops, wider rollout underway
Meta Direct checkout, including from ads Listed as a channel; details not published
Perplexity Instant Buy through PayPal; orders managed in PayPal, not Shopify US launch through PayPal

Direct checkout on Copilot, Google and Meta runs on the Universal Commerce Protocol, which Shopify and Google announced together on January 11, 2026. Shopify merchants are enabled by default (Shopify, Jan 11, 2026). One difference matters for privacy: with direct checkout, the channel receives the buyer's name, email, phone and address (data sharing and privacy).

Is AI traffic worth caring about yet?

Shopify's numbers say it is growing quickly, from a small base. In Q2 2026, Shopify reported that AI-driven traffic and orders to its stores both tripled year over year, and that 75% of AI-attributed orders came from outside the top 100 product categories (Q2 2026 earnings call). Shopify also said about half of AI-referred sessions land directly on a product page.

That long-tail figure is the interesting part for small and niche sellers: AI assistants are matching buyers to specific products, not only to the biggest brands.

Keep expectations grounded. These are company-reported numbers. In Shopify's own community forum in September 2026, merchants describe small ChatGPT referral traffic and few orders they can clearly attribute to AI (community thread). And the rules move fast: in-chat checkout lasted about six months.

7 settings to check before AI sells your products

  1. Fill in your store policies. Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and Refund Policy are required for ChatGPT.
  2. Open Sales channels, then Agentic. Review each channel and decide whether to allow catalog access and direct checkout.
  3. Know the limits of opting out. Turning agentic storefronts off does not remove your products from Shopify Catalog for the Shop app and storefront search (data sharing and privacy). Merchants have objected to this in the forum (community thread).
  4. Clean your product data. Clear titles, attributes and variants help Catalog match your products to shopper questions.
  5. Answer the questions AI agents ask. The free Knowledge Base app lets you edit the FAQs AI shopping agents use about your store, such as shipping and returns.
  6. Watch the AI channel reports. Shopify added reporting on sales and traffic from AI platforms in June 2026 (Modern Retail, Jun 18, 2026).
  7. Keep your own channels strong. Pew found that people clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits when Google showed an AI summary, compared with 15% without one (Pew Research, Jul 22, 2025). Your store and your email list are the channels no platform can switch off.

How we put this guide together

This is a research guide, not a hands-on test. We did not run a store through ChatGPT for it. On September 16, 2026, we read Shopify's Help Center pages on agentic storefronts, ChatGPT selling, data sharing and the supplemental terms, Shopify's announcements and earnings call transcripts, and documentation from Microsoft, Google and PayPal, plus reporting from American Banker, Modern Retail and Pew Research. Where sources conflicted, such as the claimed 4% ChatGPT fee, we followed the primary source and said so. Our testing method explains how we handle hands-on reviews, like our Lovable free plan test.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell on ChatGPT with Shopify?

Yes. Shopify lists eligible stores in ChatGPT through Agentic Storefronts, which are active by default. Your store must sell to US buyers, have Catalog-eligible products, and have its Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and Refund Policy filled in.

Do customers buy inside ChatGPT?

Not anymore. OpenAI scaled back Instant Checkout in March 2026. Shoppers now discover products in ChatGPT and complete the purchase on the merchant's own Shopify checkout, opened in an in-app browser or a new tab.

How much does it cost to sell on ChatGPT through Shopify?

Shopify's Help Center says there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT beyond standard payment processing. The Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms (updated July 7, 2026) allow Shopify to assess a fee in the future. A widely repeated 4% fee could not be confirmed from any primary source.

How do I turn off selling on ChatGPT in Shopify?

Go to Sales channels, then Agentic, and switch off the ChatGPT channel. Shopify notes changes can take up to 7 days. Turning agentic storefronts off does not remove products from Shopify Catalog for the Shop app and storefront search.

Can stores outside the US sell on ChatGPT?

Yes, as long as the store sells to buyers in the United States. The store itself can be based anywhere, according to Shopify's Help Center (checked September 16, 2026).

Which other AI assistants can Shopify stores sell in?

Besides ChatGPT, Shopify lists Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta as Agentic Storefronts channels. Perplexity purchases run through PayPal Instant Buy and are managed in PayPal.
