Shopify vs Systeme.io for Coaching: $39 or $17 a Month
Shopify sells a coaching session but not the time; Systeme.io's calendar sells the slot with reminders from $0. Per-session costs and which plan to pick.

If your clients pick a time and pay for it in one step, Systeme.io is the better fit for a coach: its booking calendar sells the slot itself, with reminders and a reschedule button, from $0, and the Startup plan at $17 a month gives you five session types. If you mostly sell things (journals, merch, a course download) and sessions are a side line, Shopify Basic at $39 a month is the stronger shop, but it sells the session, not the time, so you agree the time by email.
We set up a paid consultation on our own Shopify Basic store and read the plan screen inside our own Systeme.io free account. We have not built a Systeme.io booking calendar yet, so every calendar detail below comes from Systeme.io's help centre and pricing page, read on 7 October 2026, and we say which is which.
1 booking event on Free, 5 on Startup at $17 a month, unlimited bookings and 0% transaction fees on every plan (systeme.io/pricing, 7 Oct 2026)
The one difference that decides it: who picks the time
On Shopify, the customer buys a session. Nobody picks a time. When we created a 60-minute consultation at $120 on our own Shopify Basic store, the only change that made it a service was switching off Physical product in the Shipping section. The shipping block disappeared and the customer was no longer asked for an address. The product editor had no availability, no time slots and no reminder settings. The full walkthrough is in can you sell services on Shopify.
On Systeme.io, the customer picks a time and pays on the same page. According to Systeme.io's help article on selling calendar bookings (updated 26 August 2026), you attach a calendar event to a digital product on an order form, drop the Paid calendar element on the page, and the client gets a two-step flow: choose a slot, then enter their details and pay. Free calls work the same way with the plain Calendar element on an opt-in or sales page.
That one difference is the whole decision for most coaches. If your business is "book a call with me," Shopify leaves the hardest part to you. If your business is "buy my 8-week package and I will email you," Shopify does the job.
What Systeme.io's calendar does, by its own documentation
We have not run this calendar ourselves. This list is a summary of Systeme.io's help centre (articles updated 26 August to 3 September 2026):
- Individual or group events. One person per slot for 1-on-1 coaching and discovery calls, or several people per slot for workshops and classes, with a participant cap.
- Availability rules. Weekly hours, extra one-off dates, minimum notice (for example 2 hours), a cancellation deadline, a daily booking limit and buffer time between sessions.
- Locations. Zoom or Google Meet once connected, a custom meeting link, phone, or in person.
- Emails. A booking confirmation to both sides and reminders, by default 24 hours and 1 hour before, up to 3 per event. You choose when they go out; you cannot edit their wording.
- Reschedule and cancel. The client's confirmation email carries buttons for both, and you can do either from the Bookings tab.
- Google Calendar. Bookings land in your Google Calendar, and its conflict check looks at your connected calendars before confirming a slot.
One setting to change on day one: by default, Systeme.io sends the booking confirmation as soon as payment starts, even if the payment later fails. The help article says to turn on Send the booking confirmation email only after payment is completed under Settings > Notifications > Sales.
The per-session math for a coach selling 8 sessions a month
Take the same numbers we used in our best booking setup for coaches: 8 sessions at $120, so $960 a month. Prices are the vendors' own, read on 7 October 2026.
| Shopify Basic | Systeme.io Free | Systeme.io Startup | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plan price | $39/mo, or $29/mo billed yearly | $0 | $17/mo |
| Plan cost per session (8 a month) | $4.88 ($3.63 yearly) | $0 | $2.13 |
| Platform fee on a third-party payment provider | 2% of sales, $19.20 on $960 | 0% | 0% |
| Client picks a time | No, agreed by email | Yes, 1 booking event | Yes, 5 booking events |
| Reminder emails | No | Yes, up to 3 per event | Yes, up to 3 per event |
Two things the table does not show. First, both sides still pay the payment processor's own card fee (Stripe or PayPal on Systeme.io, Shopify Payments or another provider on Shopify); neither pricing page prints those rates, so we leave them out. Second, Shopify's 2% applies when you are not on Shopify Payments. Shopify Payments was not offered to our store, which is registered in Israel; the details are in what Shopify Payments asks for.
If you wanted the calendar on Shopify too, you would add a booking app from the Shopify App Store on top of the $39. We have not installed one, so we do not price it here.
Startup is $17 a month: 5 booking events, 5,000 contacts, 0% transaction fees (systeme.io/pricing, 7 Oct 2026)
Which Systeme.io plan a coach actually needs
Systeme.io's pricing table lists booking events at 1 on Free, 5 on Startup, 20 on Webinar and unlimited on Unlimited, and unlimited bookings on all four. An event is a type of session, not a single appointment.
Free is enough if you sell exactly one kind of session. One paid 60-minute call, with no free discovery call in front of it.
Startup at $17 a month is the plan most coaches end up on, because the usual coaching funnel already needs two events: a free 20-minute discovery call and the paid session. Add a group workshop and a package check-in and you are at four, still inside Startup's five.
The cap nobody mentions is on sales. The plan screen inside our own Systeme.io free account (16 September 2026) listed a sales revenue limit of 0 / 10000 USD on Free and unlimited on paid plans. That limit is not on the public pricing page, and the screen did not say whether it counts per month or in total. If it is a running total, 8 sessions at $120 a month reach it in under 11 months, so a coach who is already selling should plan to start on Startup rather than wait to hit it.
One honest oddity: the same plan screen showed a line called Calendar events 0 / 50 on Free, while today's public table says 1 event. We cannot tell from the screen whether those count the same thing, and we did not build a calendar to find out, so this article follows the public table.
We read the plan screens, not just the pricing pages
The $10,000 sales limit above only shows up inside the account. Subscribers get checks like that as we run them, at most one email a week.
Where Shopify is the better buy for a coach
Shopify wins when the shop is the business and the sessions sit beside it.
- You sell physical products. Shopify's pricing table lists unlimited products on every plan, and our store filed physical products into categories on its own. Systeme.io's table caps physical product variants at 50 on Free and 100 on Startup.
- You sell fixed seats, not times. A 12-seat workshop on a date you already announced is a product with a stock of 12. On our store, inventory stayed on after we switched off shipping, so we set the stock to 8 and Shopify would stop selling the ninth. No calendar needed.
- You sell in person. Shopify's pricing table lists casual in-person sales at pop-ups and events, and POS Pro at $89 a month per location on Basic if you need a full shop counter.
- You want reach beyond your own page. Shopify's table lists selling on social and marketplaces and in AI chats on every plan.

Who should skip each one
Skip Systeme.io if most of your revenue is physical stock with variants, shipping rules and retail channels. Its shop sits inside a funnel builder, while Shopify is built around the shop. Skip it too if you need the reminder emails written in your own words: Systeme.io's help centre says their content is generated by the system and cannot be edited.
Skip Shopify if your client must choose a time and pay in the same step. Shopify sells the session, not the slot, and paying $39 a month plus a booking app to get what a $17 plan includes is the expensive way round. If you already run a full agency or client-account setup, our GoHighLevel vs Systeme.io comparison covers that step up.
How we checked this
- Shopify: our own store on the Basic plan. We created the $120 consultation and set its stock to 8 on 23 September 2026. We have not processed a service order end to end, because the store has no payment provider set up. Pricing from shopify.com/pricing, captured 7 October 2026.
- Systeme.io: our own regular free account, opened 16 September 2026 for our Systeme.io free plan review; the plan screen numbers come from it. Pricing from systeme.io/pricing and the booking-calendar section of help.systeme.io, both captured 7 October 2026. We have not yet built a booking calendar in the account, so nothing in the calendar section is first-hand. For the full plan-by-plan breakdown, see our Systeme.io pricing guide.

Frequently asked questions
Is Systeme.io or Shopify better for coaches?
For coaches whose clients book a time, Systeme.io: its booking calendar takes the slot and the payment in one flow, from $0. Shopify Basic ($39 a month on 7 October 2026) is better when you mainly sell products and sessions are a side line.
Can Shopify take appointment bookings?
Not on its own. On our Shopify Basic store a service is a product with shipping switched off, and the product editor had no availability, time slots or reminders. You agree the time by email or add a booking app from the Shopify App Store.
Does Systeme.io have a booking calendar on the free plan?
Yes. Systeme.io's pricing table on 7 October 2026 lists 1 booking event on Free, 5 on Startup ($17 a month), 20 on Webinar and unlimited on Unlimited, with unlimited bookings on every plan.
Can I take payment for a session with the Systeme.io calendar?
Yes. Its help centre (26 August 2026) says to attach the event to a digital product on an order form and use the Paid calendar element; you need a Stripe or PayPal account connected.
Does Systeme.io charge transaction fees?
No platform fee: the pricing table shows 0% transaction fees on all four plans on 7 October 2026. You still pay Stripe or PayPal their own processing fee.
How much does Shopify cost for a coach selling sessions?
Shopify's pricing page on 7 October 2026 listed 3 days free, then $1 a month for 3 months, then Basic at $39 a month or $29 billed yearly. Selling a service costs nothing extra; Basic adds 2% when you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments.
